Universal Orlando’s new 750-acre theme park will open in 2023

Universal Orlando’s next Florida-based theme park is scheduled to open in 2023. The date slipped out during a quarterly earnings call for Comcast, which owns the Universal theme park system. The new 750-acre facility, called Epic Universe, was announced in August.

During the question-and-answer segment of Thursday’s earnings call, Comcast executives were asked about the seemingly stagnant pace of new theme parks being added under the Universal umbrella. In the company’s defense, a Comcast executive was quick to mention Nintendo World in Osaka, Japan coming in 2020; a new theme park coming in 2021 to Beijing, China; and a “fourth gate” coming to Orlando, Florida in 2023. Previously on the same call, that fourth gate was identified as the new 750-acre Epic Universe.

“We think the theme park business is a great business for us,” said the executive, “and we’re going to be making the investment to try and grow cash flow aggressively in the future.”

It’s unclear what Universal brands will be part of the massive new complex, which is said to have multiple lands. Rumors include the potential for DreamWorks’ How to Train Your Dragon, Harry Potter’s Fantastic Beasts, and even a Nintendo-themed area.
