Wildcats Begin 2019 Season With Win Over St. Mary, 52-42

LEAVENWORTH, Kan. – The Baker women’s basketball team started the 2019-20 season off on the right foot on Friday as they battled to defeat the University of St. Mary, 52-42.
The Wildcats had three players score in double figures on the night as both Taylor Smith and Abby Bird led the way with 11 points each. Madison Becker was the only other Wildcat to reach double figures as she added 10 points and a team-high eight rebounds.
With the score tied at four in the first quarter, the Spires scored back-to-back baskets, pushing St. Mary’s lead to 8-4. The Wildcats were able to tie the game at 10, but the Spires finished the quarter on a 4-0 run to take a 14-10 lead into the second quarter.
The Baker defense started the second quarter strong as they held the Spires scoreless for almost five minutes as the Wildcats took a 19-14 lead. St. Mary would then go on a run of their own late in the quarter to send the game to halftime with the Spires leading, 24-22.
Both teams struggled to get the offense going after the break as Baker held a 30-29 lead with 4:09 left in the third quarter. Both teams then traded baskets for the rest of the quarter as Baker took a 34-32 lead into the final quarter.
In the fourth quarter the Wildcats added to their lead early, but with 1:45 left in the game, St. Mary cut the lead to 45-40. On Baker’s very next possession, Madison Becker drilled a three-pointer to push the lead back to 48-40. Baker would then hold off the Spires, winning the game, 52-42.
The Wildcats begin the season with a 1-0 record and will be back on the hardwood tomorrow, Nov. 2, at 1 p.m., as they take on Ottawa in the final game of the KCAC Classic.
