Baldwin City, Kan. – In the Wildcat’s third game in four days, the Baker men’s basketball team fell short to Avila University, 87-82.
The Eagles from Avila came out of the gates hot and took an early lead. In the first half, the Wildcats trailed Avila by 12 points within the first nine minutes of game time. By the end of the first half the ‘Cats trailed by 16.
Momentum began to shift in the second half. The Wildcats were able to out score Avila after the break, 49-38, led by leading scorer Michael Brooks, who finished with 21 points going 8 for 11 from the field and knocking down 3 of 4 three pointers. Additionally, Brooks grabbed seven rebounds sharing the team high with Charles Fisher, who finished with 16 points.
“They came out and put us down early in the first half”, Head Coach Sean Dooley commented, “However, in the second half I liked the way we competed and were able to executed enough to get ourselves back into the game”.
The Wildcats were able to make a late run with a little over three minutes remaining and cut the Eagles’ lead from 12 points to five. However, it was just not enough to steal a victory as the ‘Cats lost by a final score of, 87-82.
This was the season opener for Avila. In the Eagles 2019-2020 debut two players broke the twenty-point mark, Shandon Boone finished with 21 points, and Brandon Phillips tallied 22 points after going 4 for 8 from the three-point line.
The Baker men’s basketball team is now 1-2 on the year. The team will be back in action Tuesday, November 5th as the Wildcats will travel to Oklahoma City, OK to take on (RV) Oklahoma City University at 7:00 p.m.
