BALDWIN CITY, Kan. – Despite 30 bench points, the Baker women’s basketball team fell to No. 14 MidAmerica Nazarene on Tuesday, 65-54.

“I am really proud of our team’s effort tonight,” head coach Justin Rees said. “The kids really worked and fought all night long. Again, our defense is just so far ahead of our offense right now. We have got to find more way to score in those clutch moments.”

Abby Bird led the Wildcats in scoring with 17 points, while both Jodi Adkins and Chassidy Weathers reached double figures with 12 and 11 respectively. Adkins also led the team in rebounds and steals as she pulled down five boards and collected four steals.

The Wildcats got off to another slow start, falling behind, 9-0, but Baker then finished the first quarter on an 11-4 run to cut the lead to just two heading into the second quarter, 13-11.

After tying the game on the first basket of the second quarter, Baker grabbed their first lead of the game on a basket from Adkins, 15-13. Baker eventually extended their lead to six points with 5:55 left in the half, but MidAmerica went on a run of their own to finish the half, outscoring the Wildcats 12-2 to give the Pioneers a 28-24 lead going into halftime.

MidAmerica Nazarene continued to add to their lead for most of the third quarter until they led by 10 with 6:20 left in the quarter. Baker would not go away quietly as they fought their way back and tied the game at 46 with 1:35 remaining until the then end of the third quarter. Both teams then traded baskets until Baker trailed by just one heading into the final quarter of play.

The Baker offense then struggled to find the bottom of the basket, scoring just five points in the fourth quarter, while MNU scored 15 to win the game, 65-54.

The Wildcats move to 4-3 on the season and 1-3 in Heart of America play. They will be back on the road on Dec. 2, when they travel to Evangel to take on the Crusaders at 5:30 p.m.
