CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa – Snapping a six game losing streak, the Baker women’s basketball team defeated Mount Mercy on Saturday, 69-62.

“Overall, this was a good road win for our team,” head coach Justin Rees said. “We were very balanced in our scoring effort and for the most part, we stayed committed to our game plan. We talked about ‘staying present’ today for a full 40 minutes, and we did a much better job of staying connected and engaged throughout. Learning to win and finish games again is incredibly important and with this one today, hopefully we can continue to develop and grow together.”

Both Abby Bird and Taylor Smith scored 18 points on Saturday, leading all scorers, while Bird pulled down 12 rebounds to collect her fourth double-double of the season.

Both teams struggled to score throughout the first quarter as it took just under four minutes for the Wildcats to get on the scoreboard. Over the next six minutes, both teams would trade baskets as Baker took a 9-7 lead into the second quarter.

Early in the second quarter, Baker would hold a four point lead, but a quick 5-0 run by the Mustangs gave Mount Mercy a 15-14 lead. With the score tied at 19 with 3:16 left in the quarter, Baker would go on a 9-0 run of their own to take a commanding 28-19 lead. After two free throws by the Mustangs, a layup by Taylor Smith with three seconds left gave Baker a 30-21 lead at halftime.

Midway through the third quarter, Baker extended their lead to 14, but another run by the Mustangs cut the lead to one by the end of the quarter as the Wildcats took a 43-42 lead into the fourth quarter.

Once again, the Wildcats started to pull away to start the fourth quarter, but Mount Mercy was able to stay in the game late. With Baker leading by three with just 25 seconds to go, four consecutive made free throws by Chassidy Weathers sealed the game, giving Baker the 69-62 win.

The Wildcats are now 5-6 on the year and 2-6 in Heart of America play. They will be back in action on Dec. 30, when they host Bethel College at 5:30 p.m., inside the Collins Center.
