CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa – With four players in double figures, the Baker men’s basketball team took down Mount Mercy on Saturday by a score of 82-78.

“Today was a great team win,” head coach Sean Dooley said. “We had several guys step up when the opportunity presented itself. In the first half, we looked really good on both ends of the floor and held on in the second half to secure the win. It was a great way to close out the first semester for our team.”

Xavier Elam led the way for the Wildcats, scoring 21 points in just 27 minutes, while Brandon Clifford added 15 points. Charles Fisher and Kobe Buffalomeat also reached double figures in the game, scoring 13 points each. Brett Elifritz led all players on Saturday with 10 rebounds.

Baker got off to a hot start, outscoring Mount Mercy in the first three minutes, 10-4, forcing the Mustangs to call their first timeout. Over the next four minutes, Baker would quickly extend their lead to 23-8 as Elam drilled a three-pointer with 13:01 left in the first half.

Baker would eventually hold a 16-point lead in the game, but the Mustangs would fight their way back into the game, cutting the lead to seven with 6:30 left in the first half. Baker would go on one final run before the end of the half, taking a 49-34 lead into the locker room.

After halftime, the Wildcats quickly stretched the lead to 22 points. With just 11 minutes to go in the game and the Wildcats leading, 68-47, the Mustangs began to chip away at the lead. Eight minutes later, Mount Mercy had cut the lead to single digits for the first time since the 3:25 mark in the first half.

The Mustangs didn’t stop there, and with 15 seconds left, a three-pointer cut the Baker lead to just two. After a foul, Charles Fisher knocked down both free throws and gave Baker the 82-78 win.

Baker is now 6-7 on the year and 4-4 in Heart of America play. They will not be in action again until Jan. 1, 2020, when they take on Emporia State at 7:30 p.m., in Emporia, Kan.
