MARSHALL, Mo. – After defeating Culver-Stockton on Monday night, Baker came into Tuesday night’s matchup against Missouri Valley with an overall record of 7-8 and 5-5 in conference play.
The Wildcats did not trail the entire game as they came out of the gates hot. The ‘Cats kept an up-tempo pace and got to an early lead by hitting a number of threes in first half. However, freshman Braden Wiggs was getting it done inside as he led the team with 11 points going 5-6 from the field and hitting on his only three-point attempt in the first half. The ‘Cats were able to extend their lead as they went into halftime with the score, 40-23.
The second half was not different for the Wildcat as they came out of the locker room on a 10-0 run to start the final half. Shooting a high percentage from the field, 48%, was the key to the Wildcats success. Along strong defense, holding the Vikings to 33% from the field and capitalizing on 11 turnovers, BU was able to control lead for the remainder of the game to defeat Missouri Valley, 79-63.
Wiggs finished with a career high 18 points and 7 rebounds to led all players in both categories. Followed by Xavier Elam and Brandon Clifford who each finished with 11 points in the game. The ‘Cats shot 61% from three going 11-18 on the night.
“Tonight we came out with great energy” head coach Sean Dooley said after the game, ” We played our best half of the year in the first half. We did a great job excuting our defensive game plan for 40 minutes and played very unselfishly. We had a lot of guys step up and play well but Wiggs was awsome tonight!”
The Baker men’s basketball team in now 8-8 and 6-5 in Heart of America play. The team will be back in action Saturday as they take on Central Methodist at 4:00 p.m. inside the Collins Center.
