MARSHALL, Mo. – Behind a strong fourth quarter performance, the Baker women’s basketball defeated Missouri Valley on Wednesday evening by a score of 72-59.
“This was a very good team win tonight,” head coach Justin Rees said. “I am very proud and happy for our girls. They needed a win tonight and they came out together as a unit and poured their energy into each other to earn it.”
Jodi Adkins led all scorers in the game, scoring 21 points in just 20 minutes of play. Adkins also tied for the team lead with seven rebounds, while Madison Becker also pulled down seven boards. Chassidy Weathers and Abby Bird also scored in double figures on Wednesday as Weathers scored 14 points, while Bird scored 13.
Early in the first quarter, the Vikings led, 8-7, but over the next five minutes the Wildcats went on a 7-0 run to grab a six point lead with 1:55 to play in the quarter. After Missouri Valley cut the lead to three, two free throws before the end of the quarter by Bird gave Baker a 16-11 lead heading to the second quarter.
In the first three minutes of the second quarter, Baker continued to add to their lead, grabbing their largest lead of the first half with 6:51 to play in half at 23-13. Missouri Valley then began to cut into the lead, cutting the lead to one with one minute to play. Baker would hold onto the lead as they took a four-point lead to halftime, 37-33.
Again in the third quarter, the Wildcats extended their lead but towards the end of the quarter, the Vikings were able to get things going tying the game at 50 heading to the final quarter.
The Baker defense stood strong in the fourth quarter, holding the Viking scoreless for the first four minutes, while they pushed their lead back to six points, 56-50. Missouri Valley tried multiple times to find another run, but the Wildcats were consistent at the free throw line and went on to win, 72-59.
