FAYETTE, Mo. – It took an extra five minutes, but the Baker men’s basketball team fell to Central Methodist on Wednesday evening in overtime by a score of 73-70.
“Tonight was not our night offensively,” head coach Sean Dooley said. “We did a decent job of getting the ball to the spots we wanted to, but we struggled all night to finish plays. Credit to Central Methodist for their defensive effort. Like a lot of games in this conference, tonight came down to the final couple of possessions and unfortunately, we couldn’t make the plays.”
Brandon Clifford was the team’s leading scorer on Wednesday as he scored 15 points, including three three-pointers. Braden Wiggs also reached double figures on the night with 14 points, while teammate Brett Elifritz scored nine points and pulled down a team-high 10 rebounds.
The Eagles took the early lead in the first quarter, but could not make it any larger than three points as the game was tied at 12 on a three-pointer from Elifritz with 10:09 left in the first half. After the Eagles took a one point lead, Colby Bullock gave the Wildcats their first lead of the game on a three-pointer, 16-14.
The Wildcats were able to extend their lead to seven points with just over six minutes left in the half, but the Eagles came roaring back to tie the game at 27. The Eagles kept the run going, holding a six point lead with just over a minute to play, but baskets from Elifritz and Xavier Elam cut the lead to just two heading into halftime, 33-31.
To begin the second half, the Wildcats grabbed a slim lead, but after the Eagles tied the game at 35, they took the lead and extended it to as many as eight points. Baker then went on a 7-0 run to cut the lead back to just one, 45-44.
After the media timeout, Kobe Buffalomeat hit two free throws to cut the lead to one once again, and a basket from Wiggs gave Baker the lead once again, 48-47 with 9:15 left in regulation. Baker was able to get their lead to five points, but just like the rest of the game, the Eagles came back tying the game for the sixth time at 62. With 1:23 to play in regulation, the Eagles hit a free throw to take a one –point lead, but after a big offensive rebound from Wiggs, Clifford knocked down a big three to give the Wildcats a two-point lead with 57 seconds remaining.
With 40 seconds left, the Eagles tied the game once again, and neither team could get another bucket to fall as the game was sent to overtime with the teams tied at 65.
In overtime, the game was tied two more times, but the Eagles sank three free throws within the last 28 seconds to take a three-point lead. Baker held the ball just past midcourt with 0.2 seconds left, but the Wildcats could not get a shot off as Central Methodist won the game, 73-70.
With the loss, the ‘Cats are 14-15 overall and 12-11 in Heart of America play. They will finish the regular season on Saturday, Feb. 29, when they travel to Canton, Mo., to take on Culver-Stockton at 2 p.m.
